Uncommon Types of Surfboards

There are many different types of boards in the world today. From the old Alaia board to the modern thruster and everything in between. New models seem to pop up almost every day so we try to give you a little guide to what is out there.

Here is a short overview of not so common type of surfboards:

1 QUAD

A surfboard that has 4 fins is called Quad Surfboard. They give you more speed and looseness.

2 BONZER

A surfboard that has 1 fin in the middle and 2 or 4 small ones on the side is called bonzer. It is meant to reduce drag and better hold in turns.

3 HYBRID

The Hybrid mixes the design features from two similar board i.e. the shortboard and the fish into one hybrid board.

4 EGG

A wide, thick surfboard with a round nose and round tail. Works best in small surf.

5 FOAMBOARD

A board completely made out of foam for safety reasons. Suitable for beginners who just start to learn how to surf.

6 RHINO CHASER

A big wave board for 10+ feet swell, similar to the gun.

7 TOWBOARD

A surfboard specially designed to pull into large waves behind a jet-ski. Some boards have straps and are weighed down to cope with the bumps on the face of the wave.

8 ALAIA

A thin, round-noses, square-tailed surfboard ridden in pre-20th century Hawaii. They have no fins and are made from wood.

9 PAIPO BOARD

Paipo board are recognized as the oldest wave riding vehicles. The shape is similar to the Alaia board but it is mainly ridden like a bodyboard.

10 MINI SIMMONS

Small, wide and very thick board designed by Bob Simmons. Very fast board, suitable for small waves. The original setup has two fins however other set ups are also used.

11 KNEEBOARD

Boards specially designed to ride when kneeling. On these boards you can make steeper drops and the feeling of speed is much greater than on a surfboard. Similar than today’s bodyboards.

12 HYDROFOIL BOARD

A board with a metal rod that has wings attached to it. These wings lift the board out of the water. The result is less friction and higher speeds.

13 SKIMBOARD

A wooden or fiberglass board that is meant to be ridden on very shallow water. You run on the beach, throw your skimboard and ride the thin layer of water or oncoming shorebreak.

14 THE DICK

A surfboard ordered by Paul Fisher and is shaped like a penis and two balls. Great funny experiment and actually can be ridden as a normal surfboard.
